  • Used to grasp suture needles during suturing when pushing/pulling the needle and suture through tissue.
  • It has short serrated jaws at the distal end to provide better grip of the needle
  • it is available in a wide variety of sizes and designs.

Direction to use :-

  • Preparation and Sterilization: Ensure that the instrument has been properly sterilized using an autoclave or other suitable sterilization method before use. Prepare the surgical site, materials (sutures), and any other necessary instruments.
  • Gloving and Gowning: Put on sterile gloves and gowns, maintaining an aseptic technique.
  • Handling the Needle Holder: Hold the needle holder with a pencil-like grip, using your thumb and forefinger to control the handles while allowing your other fingers to rest on the instrument’s shaft.Familiarize yourself with the instrument’s locking mechanism (if applicable) and how to open and close it.
  • Needle Loading: Load the suture needle onto the needle holder’s tips, positioning the needle’s eye (the hole) between the tips.
  • Needle Grasping: Use the needle holder’s tips to grasp the needle at an appropriate distance from the needle’s point, ensuring a secure grip without damaging the needle.
  • Suture Placement: Insert the needle through the tissue at the desired location, using the needle holder to guide the needle through the tissue layers.
  • Needle Manipulation: Maneuver the needle holder to control the direction and depth of the needle as you pass it through the tissue.
  • Suture Tying: After passing the needle through the tissue layers, release the needle holder’s grip on the needle.Use your non-dominant hand to hold the free end of the suture thread.Manipulate the needle holder to pass the needle back through the opposite tissue layer, creating a loop for the suture.Use the free end of the suture thread to tie a knot securely, maintaining proper tension for wound closure.
  • Repositioning and Repeating: Reposition the needle holder as needed to continue suturing along the wound, ensuring consistent and evenly spaced sutures.
  • Completion and Sterile Technique: Complete the required number of sutures according to the procedure’s plan.Maintain an aseptic technique throughout the procedure to prevent infection.
  • Final Knot and Cut: Once all sutures are placed, tie a final knot to secure the wound closure.Trim excess suture thread as needed, leaving an appropriate length for easy removal later.
  • Disposal and Cleaning: Dispose of used sutures and sharps in the appropriate biohazard containers.Clean the instrument thoroughly and sterilize it for future use.
